Moving from GrandPerspective

Keep the tree map if you enjoy it; it is free and macleanup has nothing like it. What macleanup adds is the second half of the job. GrandPerspective shows you a big block and leaves you to work out whether it is safe to remove. A numbered section already knows what the block is and what removing it costs.

What maps to what

In GrandPerspectiveIn macleanup
Tree map of disk usageSection 26, text only
Finding big filesSection 18, no age filter
Delete from the viewSection 24, to the Trash, with confirmation
That huge node_modules blockSection 23, deleted permanently

Move across

  1. Scan in GrandPerspective, note the three biggest blocks, then ask macleanup.

    npx macleanup --profile audit --dry-run
  2. If a block is a build folder, preview that section with your own threshold.

    npx macleanup --only 23 --stale-build-days 90 --dry-run
  3. If it is in ~/Library/Caches, preview user caches.

    npx macleanup --only 5 --dry-run
  4. Protect a project you would hate to rebuild before you run section 23: see --exclude-path in Stale build artefacts.
